Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries SAC is a protected coastal and estuarine area in southwest Wales, offering rich wildlife habitats and opportunities to explore diverse marine and estuarine environments.
Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries SAC covers a large portion of the south Wales coastline, including the coastal waters and estuaries of the rivers Towy, Loughor, and Taf. This Special Area of Conservation was designated under the EU Habitats Directive because of its significant natural habitats and species of European importance. The area includes intertidal mudflats, sandflats, saltmarshes, estuaries, and coastal waters that support a variety of flora and fauna, including rare and protected species such as otters, conger eels, and several species of migratory fish. The estuaries in the SAC serve as vital feeding and nursery grounds for birds and fish, making the region important for biodiversity. Visitors are drawn to the mix of coastal scenery, walking routes, birdwatching, and fishing opportunities. Nearby beaches and coastal paths offer access to explore the unique seaside environments. The mix of saltmarsh, mudflats, and rocky shores supports a wide range of marine life, and the area's waters are popular for sea angling and paddle sports. Historical landmarks in the surrounding region include Carmarthen town, one of Wales’ oldest towns, with its medieval castle and cultural sites.
